HON. HARRIET D. CORNELLHarriet D. Cornell is a truly admirable innovator and leader. A graduate of Swarthmore College and NYU’s Wagner Graduate School of Public Policy (MPA), she has served as a Rockland County Legislator since 1984, and was the first woman to serve as Chair of the Legislature. She is also a founder of the Rockland Education Collaborative, Legislature’s Commission on Women’s Issues, Rockland Schools for the 21st Century (Rockland 21C) and chairs the Rockland County Task Force on Water Resources Management. So vast are her accomplishments and contributions that in 1999 Rockland Journal News named her as one of 25 people who had made the greatest impact on Rockland County in the 20th Century. Over the years, Cornell’s impactful service includes advocacy for protection of the environment, improved health services for women and children, enhanced educational resources for children, homeland security, transportation, smart land use, and the arts. Harriet has always held a special place for the arts, starting from childhood when her mother taught her to dance and took her to Broadway shows. A long-time member and supporter of the Edward Hopper House Museum & Study Center, she is also a dedicated board member of Rockland Center for the Arts and chaired the Legislature’s Arts, Culture and Tourism Committee. One of Harriet’s greatest accomplishments is that she sponsored and passed the laudable Arts in Public Places Law in 1986, which requires art to be included in Rockland County-bonded capital construction projects. A resident of West Nyack, Harriet was married for 48 years to attorney J. Martin Cornell, until his death in 2002. Her lovely family includes three daughters and a son (Hon. Keith Cornell, Rockland County Surrogate Judge), and four grandsons. |
DAVID SIROISDave’s connection to the Edward Hopper House Museum & Study Center began in 2012 and after that he never left, serving for eight years on the board of trustees and continuing to help oversee, as a contractor and advisor, a plethora of impactful projects, both large and small. Introduced to the Museum by then co-director Victoria Hertz and local contractor Sean Ward, he took on his first project to restore the front porch which offers visitors direct views of the Hudson River and hosts the heirloom wisteria. His regular attentiveness to our historic clapboard and shingle building at large reveals his larger dedication of the museum’s mission to preserve the birthplace and family home of Edward Hopper. Today, the house is also ADA accessible with an outdoor wheelchair ramp and a compliant ground floor restroom, a major project accomplished by Sirois working with our Staff and Board. He contributed another capstone by building a new stage in 2017 as the garden was redesigned. Currently, he is involved with carpentry preparation for the long overdue painting of the house and is also participating in a larger grant funded capital project to upgrade the electricity of the house and garden. His gift to us is that he finds pleasure remaining connected to the Edward Hopper House and by providing valuable support along the way, as needed. Born and raised in Massachusetts, Dave began his career as an apprentice carpenter in 1980, then moved to Rockland County in 1983, working for two different building companies over nine years. It was here, where in 1990 he met his wife Phyllis. In 1992 Dave and Phyllis had a very impactful year, getting married, starting their business, Sirois Construction, that provides projects with the highest level of craftsmanship, and buying their first home in Nyack– a real fixer upper, he says! Now 30 plus years later, they are in their third home in Nyack, located right down the hill from Edward Hopper House. |
