Edward Hopper is a "Really Big Artist." (He was really tall, too.) So we're making a really big celebration for his birthday weekend - he was born on July 22, 1882. Join us for any, or all, of these activities on "Hopper's Birthday Weekend"!

When a birthday goes missing, only one detective is clever enough, brave enough, and smart enough to solve the case - Mystery Max!

Join Max on a wild adventure to find Red's missing birthday. Along the way we'll meet crazy characters, make new friends, sing songs and find clues. Whodunit?

FREE: PARTY ARTMAKING

After the Puppet Show, we'll be making a Party Hat craft, there will be an outdoor Paint Party, and Palette Cakes! 1:30-3:30p

Our "Hop Into Art" Lab with activities inspired by Hopper is open for visitors of all ages to drop-in and create.
Come to teacher-led art stations inspired by Hopper: decorate a birthday party hat, create a tempera painting, or make your own hand puppet! (This is not a drop-off event.) Stay all afternoon or drop by for a bit.

Here, for the very first time, contemporary visionary Tomokazu Matsuyama directly engages with the iconic work of Edward Hopper, focusing on his masterful 1952 painting, "Morning Sun" through his striking new work, "Morning Sun Dance" (2025).

Join us for a hike - in Hopper's footsteps - up Hook Mountain.

Join the Edward Hopper House Museum for a guided hike through the scenic trails at Hook Mountain, culminating in a relaxing picnic (bring your own) at the summit, or below at Marydell Faith & Life Center. Guided by Bob Stien, Tom Perry, and Jeremy Cazes, as you walk these shaded trails you'll catch glimpses of the Hudson River glistening below, climb rocky paths once explored by Edward Hopper himself and enjoy stunning panoramas. Reaching the top, the view unfolds like a painting: sailboats drift along the water far below, the cliffs glow in the afternoon sun, and the skyline of distant towns nestle into the horizon. As you are immersed in this scene you feel the connection between Hopper’s artistic vision and the landscape that inspired it. Be sure to bring light cuisine, your curiosity, and your camera!

ABOUT YOUR GUIDES:

Bob Stien is passionate about the great outdoors. As an environmental educator he is committed to inspiring others to respect and appreciate all that is found in natural settings. He is on the board of the Friends of Rockland Lake and Hook Mountain. He is one of the founders of the New York Fathering Conference.
Tom Perry is a life-long resident of Nyack, with an interest in nature and local history. He taught Science at Nyack High School for 33 years, and has led many hiking trips.
Jeremy Cazes is a key team member in Edward Hopper House's Visitor Service, and an avid explorer of Rockland County’s vast places to hike.

Circa 1898(?), Stone quarry at Upper Nyack, NY. The huge quarrying operation in Upper Nyack was in operation until the Palisades Interstate Park Commission bought the property and created Nyack Beach and Hook Mountain State parks. Courtesy Nyack Library.

Around 1899, Hopper painted a watercolor of the Hook, as locals call it, which is in the Whitney Museum’s collection. Hook Mountain is now a New York State Park and a National Natural Landmark with walking trails, hawk-watching, and stunning views. (Read more about this in our Walking Tour!)

SWINGTIME BIG BAND CONCERT

Tuesday, July 22, 2025, 7:00p

FREE and Open to the Public Commemorating the 80th Anniversary of WWII’s end, New York’s SWINGTIME BIG BAND returns to Nyack’s long-running FREE MUSIC ON THE HUDSON summer concert series in Memorial Park, Nyack to perform a joyous mix of Big Band classics and popular tunes from the Great American Songbook.

This high-powered 20-piece band vividly recreates hits from the Swing Era and beyond, including chart-toppers by Glenn Miller, Count Basie, Artie Shaw, Tommy Dorsey, Benny Goodman, and Les Brown. Plus, Swingtime’s two entertaining vocalists salute some of our most iconic singers, including Ella Fitzgerald, Lena Horne, and Frank Sinatra, along with a 100th birthday tribute to the legendary Sammy Davis, Jr. The July 22 concert is also being held on the 144th birthday of another American standard of this era, Edward Hopper.

Bring your own chairs and blankets. You may also bring your own refreshments. We kindly ask that you carry away your trash and recyclables.
