The ever-popular summer music program kicks off on July 9 and runs for eight consecutive Thursday evenings, from 7-9pm, on the Garden Stage of the Edward Hopper House Museum, located at 82 N. Broadway, Nyack, NY 10960.  The Museum has produced "Jazz in the Garden" for over forty five years, making the Museum a dynamic hub for not only iconic VISUAL artists, but also legendary musicians and groundbreaking sounds of emerging musical artists.

Al Orlo (guitar): toured and recorded with the legendary singer Ben E. King for 25 years and was his Musical Director from 1996 until his passing on April 30, 2015. Guitarist with Vincent Pastore’s (The Sopranos) Gangster Squad 

Bobby Deitch (Drummer): drummer/musical director for the Ray Charles tribute Forever Ray, performances as drummer with King Solomon Hicks, Take Three, Vincent Pastore’s (The Sopranos) Gangster Squad and several other musical projects including former Allman Brothers guitarist Warren Haynes. Songwriter/performer with the Bobby Deitch Band with 2 Grammy considered albums.
JUL 16 - Richie Morales Quintet @ NYACK CENTER
Due to hazardous air from wildfire smoke, the Jazz Concert July 16 is moving INDOORS to the Nyack Center at 58 Depew Ave, Nyack, NY. Bongo's Fries will also not be in attendance; they have been postponed to a later concert date.

Born in NYC, Richie Morales is a versatile musician most recently touring with guitarist Al Di Meola. He has performed and recorded with a wide range of contemporary artists such as The Brecker Brothers, Spyro Gyra, Grover Washington Jr., Michael Franks,   Mike Stern, Saxophonist Bill Evans, Diane Reeves, Stevie Wonder, Carly Simon, George Russell’s Living Time Orchestra, Gato Barbieri, Dave Valentin, Ray Barretto, and Herbie Mann. He also leads his own group performing a mixture of Jazz standards and original music. Richie recently retired from the jazz faculty at Purchase College Conservatory of Music SUNY having taught there since 2000. He has also taught at the Juilliard School’s Music Advancement Program.

Hervé Alexandre is a saxophonist, rapper, producer, vocalist, and dancer hailing from Rockland County, NY. Hervé’s journey began with a love for jazz and grew into an exploration of multiple genres. Through years of practice, performance, and collaboration, he has honed a sound that is both innovative and deeply personal. Every track tells a story, reflecting his musical roots, cultural influences, and life experiences. He currently builds performance art-based programs for organizations throughout the tri-state area and is an active recording/performing artist.

Trombonist/composer Michael Davis has enjoyed a diverse and acclaimed career over the past 40 years. Widely known as the trombonist for five world tours with the Rolling Stones, he toured and recorded extensively with Frank Sinatra, has released 14 CDs as a solo artist, composed over 150 works, authored a dozen books for brass players of all levels and appeared on over 500 CDs, television themes and motion picture soundtracks. He is the founder, creator and president of Hip-Bone Music, Inc.

In 2011, the S.E. Shires Company released the Michael Davis signature model trombone and followed that in 2014 with the release of the Michael Davis+ trombone.

Born to a musical family in San Francisco, CA on August 13th, 1961, Michael’s early musical studies included the piano, drums, tuba, baritone horn and electric bass. Settling on the trombone in high school, he quickly found his stride and received principal chairs in many all-state honor groups. His collegiate career commenced at the Eastman School of Music in the fall of 1979.

In the spring of 1983, Davis received the break he had hoped for when the Buddy Rich Band called and asked him to sign on. His two-year stint with the band forged musical and personal friendships that continue to this day and presented him with “the best graduate degree anyone could possibly hope for.” 

Michael’s freelance career in New York City began in earnest in 1986 and before long he was one of the top trombonists around. As testimony to his versatility and wide regard, the list of jazz and pop luminaries he has worked with includes: James Taylor, Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan, Aerosmith, Tony Bennett, Jay Z, Sarah Vaughan, Sting, Beck, Branford Marsalis, Peter Gabriel, Sheryl Crow, Lyle Lovett, Bob Mintzer, Paul Simon, David Sanborn, Terence Blanchard and scores of others.

In the field of music education, Davis has served as a guest artist and clinician around the world, while also authoring a number of highly esteemed instructional books and arrangements for musicians of all ages and abilities. A multiple recipient of awards from the National Endowment for the Arts, he maintains his own jazz groups and projects through Hip-Bone Music. 

He has documented his efforts on 14 CDs as a leader, including his latest, Open City with the Hip-Bone Big Band featuring a star studded line-up of New York jazz and studio luminaries. Open City showcases a unique family alliance with Michael’s oldest son Cole penning three of the compositions, co-producing the entire project, and playing bass while his younger son Zaq brings his talents to the trumpet section.

Currently, Davis continues his busy schedule as an in demand New York freelance musician with a steady diet of Broadway shows, studio recording work and live concerts. He travels extensively as a solo artist guesting with professional, college and high school bands around the world, while also continuing to build his publishing company into one of the preeminent purveyors of the highest quality music for brass.

Bobby Sanabria is an eight time Grammy-nominee as a leader. Known as a drummer, percussionist, composer, arranger, conductor, documentary film producer, educator, activist, and bandleader, his versatility as both a drummer and percussionist, from small group to big band, has become legendary. A native son of the South Bronx born to Puerto Rican parents, he has performed and recorded with every major figure in the world of Latin jazz and salsa from Mario Bauzá, Tito Puente, Mongo Santamaría, Dizzy Gillespie, Chico O’Farrill, Ray Barretto, Cándido, to Larry Harlow, Ruben Blades, Celia Cruz, and jazz luminaries as diverse as Henry Threadgill, Charles McPherson, Randy Brecker, Joe Chambers, Jean Lucien, The Mills Brothers, and others. In 2003 he was presented with a “Lifetime Achievement Award" by Ivan  Acosta of Latin Jazz USA, in recognition of Bobby's extraordinary creative contribution to Latin jazz. DRUM! Magazine named him Percussionist of the Year (2005); he was named Percussionist of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association in 2011 and 2013. In 2006, he was inducted into the Bronx Walk of Fame. He was a recipient of the 2018 Jazz Education Network (JEN) LeJENS of Jazz Lifetime Achievement Award for his work as a musician and educator. In 2008 Congressman Dennis Kucinich honored his work as a musician and educator by reading his name into the Congressional Record and in 2018 the U.S. Congressional Black Caucus honored him as a musician, educator. Every single one of his big band recordings, seven in total, have been nominated for Grammys. His 2018 recording, ‘West Side Story Reimagined,' reached #1 on the national Jazz Week radio charts, was nominated for a 2018 Grammy, and won the prestigious 2019 Record of The Year Award from the Jazz Journalists Association. Partial proceeds from sales of the recording go to the Jazz Foundation of America’s Puerto Rico Relief Fund for musicians. He is the Co-Artistic Director of the Bronx Music Heritage Center and the forthcoming Bronx Music Hall. His lifetime dedication to spreading the history, culture, of jazz and Latin jazz to the general public as a performer, as well as educating a new generation of players, composers, arrangers, has no parallel. A member of Max Roach’s legendary M’BOOM percussion ensemble, he is on the faculty of the New School and NYU. He is also the on air host of the Latin Jazz Cruise radio show on WBGO FM, the nation’s number one jazz station.

-Annette St. John is a native New Yorker. Born and raised in Harlem, a neighborhood of many show business notables. Her style of music are jazz, blues, standards and gospel, ranging from the 1930’s to the present. Early on, she was influenced by such artist as Sarah Vaughn and Dakota Staton. From her beginning at Sweetwater’s, Annette has appeared at numerous Manhattan venues, such as The Apollo Theatre, the Blue Note, Cotton Club, Village Vanguard, Londell’s, Tavern On The Green, Showman’s, Birdland, the Europa Club, Ashford & Simpson’s SugarBar, Cajun and American Legion in Harlem. On May 10, 2008, Annette performed at the Westchester Arts Council in White Plains, New York with her trio and special guest Houston Pearson on Sax. In 2011, she started working at “Smoke,” Sunday brunch and also at the world famous “Cotton Club” in Harlem. 2013, she began performing at the “Red Roster,” “Brownstone Jazz” in Brooklyn, “The Jazz Foundation of America”, “Alvin Ailey II”, and at “Shell’s Bistro” an up and coming Jazz Spot in Harlem with her quartet.  - @JazzEnthusiast on YouTube

Join us on August 20 for an unforgettable musical homage to John D. Anthony—a legendary bass-baritone whose 70-year career bridged Broadway, the Metropolitan Opera, and sacred song. 
This performance is also in loving memory of Jon Kevin Jones.

From principal roles in Hello, Dolly! and Show Boat to performing at the Kennedy Center’s grand opening, John shared his gift across the globe with over 15 symphony orchestras and on iconic TV shows like The Ed Sullivan Show.

John Daniel Anthony, aged 88, passed away on December 4, 2024, in West Nyack, NY. Born on May 7, 1936, in Ronco Pennsylvania. John led a rich life marked by his dedication to the arts and his family. John graduated from Masontown High, PA. in 1954 and later from West Virginia University in 1964. He served honorably in the United States Navy from December 1955 to August 1959, where he was also a noted soloist in the US Navy Chorus from 1957 to 1959.

John's professional life was as vibrant as his personality. His 70-year career spanned across singing, acting, and producing. He was a classical bass baritone who graced many prestigious stages including Broadway, where he played principal roles in "Hello Dolly", “Show Boat”, "Oklahoma", and "Jimmy".
 
Notably, he performed in the original cast of Leonard Bernstein's Mass at the Kennedy Center's grand opening. His talents also led him to Porgy and Bess at the Metropolitan Opera and to feature as a soloist with over 15 symphony orchestras and 10 opera companies globally. His contributions to television and film were significant, including roles on "The Ed Sullivan Show", "The Great American Dream Machine", and in films like "Cotton Comes to Harlem" and "Rachel Getting Married". He was also employed as the musical director on ABC’s daytime soap opera, “One Life to Live”.

John was deeply committed to community service, founding and directing the Martin Luther King Singers and the John Anthony Singers in Rockland County. His worship life was just as active, participating in congregations at New City Methodist Church, Irvington Presbyterian, Riverside Church NYC, Abyssinian Baptist Church NYC, and Congers United Methodist Church.

John Anthony constantly promoted the African American Spiritual as the truly authentic expressions of genius here the United States. Born from the unbearable circumstances that his ancestors were subjected to through chattel slavery and oppression.
 
His elevation of this form of music allowed for a greater sense of pride in the fact that the Spirituals gave birth to the Blues, Ragtime, Jazz, Gospel, R & B and Pop Music in this country!

Cameron Brown and Dannie's Calypso was born out of Cameron Brown's initial emersion in the music of Miles Davis, his seminal experience performing with Don Cherry (he met him and started playing with him when he was 19!), five years with Archie Shepp, ten years of exhilarating intensity with Don Pullen, George Adams and Dannie Richmond, nine years with Dewey Redman, three years with Joe Lovano and Idris Muhammad, and almost 30 years performing in duo with Sheila Jordan  In addition to original compositions, we experiment with Don Cherry’s, "cocktail suite" concept:  a harmelodic melding of a number of compositions into a cohesive, continuous collage of music.  Following Don’s original concept, almost any tune, from early bebop gems, to Ornette’s and Don’s originals, to Albert Ayler melodies, to Jobim bossas can find their way into these suites.

The band features a group of remarkable improvisers:  Russ Johnson (Lee Konitz, Steve Swallow, Ohad Talmor, Dave Liebman, Laurie Anderson, Omnitone records) trumpet, flugelhorn and cornet; Jason Rigby (Mike Holober, Mark Guiliana, John Patitucci, Jim McNeely, Donnie McCaslin, Tony Malaby, Slide Hampton, Fresh Sounds records), tenor and soprano saxophones; Lisa Parrott (Gunther Sculler, Dennis Charles, Jason Lindner, DIVA, Jimmy Heath, ABC records, Goat Angel records), baritone, alto and soprano saxophones; Cameron Brown (George Russell, Don Cherry, Archie Shepp, Art Blakey, Don Pullen/George Adams, Dewey Redman, Sheila Jordan, Joe Lovano, Omnitone records), bass;  Tony Jefferson (Lou Donaldson, Don Friedman, Kenny Drew Jr., Eddie Harris, James Weidman, Annie Ross) drums and cymbals.
