July 10, 2025 - The Scott Colley Trio
Scott Colley's stature as a leading bassist in the field of improvised music is well known, and easily measured. He's been called "one of the leading bassists of our postbop era, and a composer-bandleader of quietly serious resolve" by The New York Times, while musical colleagues, like saxophonist Joshua Redman, praise him for being "one of the most musical bassists playing today. To me, he seems to have...this natural, intuitive, empathic sense of how to bring the most out of the other musicians and the music he's playing."
Colley, a four time Grammy nominee, has performed on over 200 recordings, eight of those as bandleader and composer. He is a first-call sideman, as renowned for his role in groups led by well-known headliners— John Scofield, Herbie Hancock, Chris Potter, many others-as he is for being part of all-star projects like "Still Dreaming" with Joshua Redman, Ron Miles, and Brian Blade; and "Steel House" with Edward Simon and Brian Blade.

August 21, 2025 - Marya Lawrence Quartet with Eric Person, Cameron Brown, and Ben Perowsky
Marya Lawrence
Marya Lawrence has music in her blood. The daughter of saxophone legend Arnie Lawrence, who co-founded and taught at the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in New York, Lawrence found her voice early on and began composing and improvising as a child, frequently collaborating with her older brother, the noted saxophonist Erik Lawrence. She made her public debut as a vocalist leading the all-female Bitches Brew and released her first album, All the Way Back, with her jazz quartet Metamorphosis in 1998. On her latest release, recorded just before Covid struck, Lawrence anticipated the pandemic by doing what every musician did when all their gigs dried up: hustled to keep Paying the Bills. She also doubled down on the title with a play on words that fulfills a longtime goal: to pay tribute to all the Bills who influenced her as an artist, from Billie Holliday to Bill “Count” Basie to the recently deceased Bill Withers, to whom Lawrence dedicated the album. In the process of giving the Bills their due, she puts a fresh retro contempo twist on many classics from the jazz canon, which dovetail nicely with her own originals. An inspired vocal chameleon, Lawrence doesn’t remake songs to conform to a dominant style. Instead, she lets every song reveal itself, using her voice as a vehicle that often changes course along the way. “God Bless the Child,” her homage to Billie Holliday, starts out sassy and sweet and gradually becomes more forlorn, spurring her to testify with gospel-like vocal swoops punctuated by her trademark scats. “You Are So Beautiful” (Billy Preston), her intimate duet with her brother Erik, crescendos on a swell of scats before gently fading into a murmur, while her “digga doo” take on “Use Me” is full of feisty surprises and just plain fun. Recorded with two stellar lineups of world-class musicians, Paying the Bills enhances its message with beautifully produced videos for several of the tracks that give other creative artists a chance to shine. Two tap dancers double down on Lawrence’s scatting in “Use Me,” while Lawrence herself takes wing as a dancer on her own “Night Butterfly,” a jazzy bossa nova number that shines a light into the darkness. While the music speaks for itself, the videos really make the songs come alive and are worth seeking out. |
Eric Person
Renowned saxophonist Eric Person has notched an impressive resume performing and recording with many legends in jazz such as Dave Holland, McCoy Tyner, Chico Hamilton, Houston Person, John Hicks and many others. Eric has performed with genre-bending musicians Vernon Reid, Ronald Shannon Jackson, Will Calhoun, and Ben Harper. An active band leader, Person leads the Eric Person Quartet, Trio-kinesis, Eric Person Big Band and Person2Person (features Houston Person). He is a prolific composer with eleven CDs under his leadership, with his latest being 2022’s Blue Vision. In 1982, Person moved to New York City from St. Louis Missouri. The following year, he received the opportunity to perform with legendary drummer Chico Hamilton. For 15 years, Eric toured the United States, Europe, Japan, and South America, recording six CDs with him as well. From 1994-1997, Eric was a pivotal member of theDave Holland Quartet. This high-energy ensemble performed at prestigious concert halls and festivals throughout the United States, Europe, and Canada and recorded the classic Dream of the Elders. During this same period, Person was a member of the World Saxophone Quartet and is featured on the band’s CD Moving Right Along. After many years as a sideman, Person recorded his debut as a leader. Arrival, the 1993 release, emphasized a variety of styles, fresh compositional approaches, and a willingness to take chances. It was an auspicious beginning with Josef Woodard of Down Beat Magazine saying “Person swerving to the left, finding a fresh path between mainstream jazz and chancier, more personalized terrain.” Eric’s sophomore release Prophecy, is a daring, conceptual release which focuses on Eric’s saxophones in solo, duos, and trio settings. James Marcus of Jazz Times states that Person’s successes within Prophecy are “evidence of a formidable talent.” More Tales to Tell, Person’s1997 release, features his working band along with two performances by guest bassist Dave Holland. By this time, strong arrangements and compositions were a hallmark of every Eric Person CD. The band was expanded on select numbers to include acoustic guitar, bass clarinet, bassoon, and flute. In 1999, Person formed his own label Distinction Records and under the newly formed moniker Meta-Four released Extra Pressure and Live at Big Sur. Reviewing Live at Big Sur, Russ Musto of All About Jazz says “Person is more then fine; he’s a major talent of his generation.” In the 2000s, he released a succession of CDs that put his saxophone in different contexts, revealing his versatility. Reflections The Best of Collection, Rhythm Edge, The Grand Illusion, Thoughts on God and Duoscope all spotlight Eric’s personal sound, dexterity, and compositional prowess. Of The Grand Illusion, Donald Elfman of All About Jazz says: “Person seems to find something new to say and a different direction to follow with every project he undertakes.” Since arriving in New York, Eric Person’s career has featured many highlights from being a featured soloist with the New York City Symphony at the Apollo Theater to performing with the McCoy Tyner Big Band at the Newport Jazz Festival. Today, jazz education is at the top of the list of endeavors. In addition to performing, Eric is currently an adjunct saxophone instructor at Bard College in upstate New York. In 2015, Eric was selected to study orchestration at the Herb Alpert School of Music at UCLA with many of jazz’s top composers and arrangers like James Newton, Steve Coleman, Nicole Mitchell, and others. In 2019, Person received his bachelors degree in music from Empire State College. This fulfilled his personal mission to receive his degree in music and make education an important part of his wheelhouse. |

Steven Bernstein
An impactful presence on the New York scene over the past 30 years, trumpeter, composer, arranger and bandleader Steven Bernstein has immersed himself in such a wide array of music with his bands Sexmob, Millennial Territory Orchestra, Diaspora Soul, Universal Melody Brass Band, Spanish Fly, Blue Campfire and the Butler-Bernstein Hot 9 that he defies easy categorization. A former member of the Lounge Lizards and Levon Helm’s Midnight Ramble Band, Bernstein has also composed works for film, theater and dance in addition to doing arrangements for a diverse list of artists ranging from Lou Reed to Lee “Scratch” Perry, Allen Toussaint, Marianne Faithfull, Linda Ronstadt, Rufus Wainwright, Darlene Love, Mario Pavone, Bill Frisell, John Lurie and the Kansas City All-Stars. His lengthy list of sideman credits includes recent recordings by Laurie Anderson (Heart of a Dog), Roswell Rudd (Trombone for Lovers), Mostly Other People Do The Killing (Loafer’s Hollow), Antony and the Johnsons (Turning) and Nels Cline (Lovers). He also continues to perform with Ray Anderson’s Pocket Brass Band, Omaha Diner and the Kamikaze Ground Crew. Born on October 8, 1961 in Berkeley, California, Bernstein was hugely influenced by his Berkeley School band director, Phil Hardymon, who instilled in his students a sense of disciplined ensemble playing in the Count Basie tradition. In 6th grade, Bernstein formed what would become a lifelong friendship and musical partnership with saxophonist Peter Apfelbaum, later the leader of the Hieroglyphics Ensemble. The two would attend performances in the Bay Area by Eddie Harris, Sam Rivers, Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Roland Kirk and Woody Shaw at the Keystone Korner and a series of solo concerts by Leo Smith, Lester Bowie, Oliver Lake and Baikida Carroll as well as one eye-opening gig by the Art Ensemble of Chicago at San Francisco’s Great American Music Hall. Bernstein studied in Berkeley with former Woody Herman and Stan Kenton trumpeter John Coppola and after moving to New York in 1978 was mentored by lead trumpeter and ubiquitous session man Jimmie Maxwell, who had replaced Harry James in the Benny Goodman Orchestra in the early 1940s. Bernstein joined John Lurie’s outfit the Lounge Lizards in 1990, appearing on the group’s 1991 release Live in Berlin on the Intuition label. Shortly before that, in 1988 he had formed the daring Spanish Fly trio with slide guitarist Dave Tronzo and tuba virtuoso Marcus Rojas. They began performing at the Knitting Factory and subsequently released 1994’s Rags to Britches on Knitting Factory Works and 1996’s Fly By Night on Accurate Records. By 1995, producer Hal Willner, a fan of Spanish Fly, enlisted Bernstein as arranger for the soundtrack to Robert Altman’s film Kansas City, which led to collaborations on other Willner projects, including arranging for Jazz Foundation of America benefit concerts (featuring singers Lou Reed, Bono, Darlene Love, Macy Gray, Elvis Costello and Dr. John) at the Apollo Theatre, tributes to Bill Withers, Doc Pomus and Leonard Cohen at Celebrate Brooklyn and arranging work on the soundtrack for the 2005 documentary film, Leonard Cohen: I’m Your Man. In 1996, Bernstein formed Sexmob with saxophonist Briggan Krauss, bassist Tony Scherr and drummer Kenny Wollesen. It remains his primary vehicle for exploring the slide trumpet, a rare instrument that he picked up in a Woodstock guitar shop back in 1977. Sexmob made its recording debut with 1998’s Din of Inequity and followed with 2000’s Solid Sender, 2001’s Sex Mob Does Bond, 2003’s Dime Grind Palace, 2006’s Sexotica, 2009’s Sex Mob Meets Medeski: Live in Willisau and 2013’s Cinema, Circus & Spaghetti: Sex Mob Plays Fellini. In that span of recordings, the group put their patented Sexmob touch on an eclectic list of tunes by the likes of Leadbelly, John Barry, Hoagy Carmichael, Paul McCartney, Duke Ellington, Prince, Kurt Cobain, the Rolling Stones, James Brown, Count Basie, Professor Longhair and Nino Rota. The group’s latest, in its 20th anniversary year, is Cultural Capital, the first Sexmob recording to feature all Bernstein original compositions. From 1999 to 2008, Bernstein contributed four recordings to John Zorn’s Radical Jewish Culture series on his Tzadik label — 1999’s Diaspora Soul (featuring members of the Lounge Lizards and Sex Mob), 2002’s Diaspora Blues (featuring jazz legend Sam Rivers), 2004’s Diaspora Hollywood (inspired by the classic film composers and the West Coast cool jazz sound) and 2008’s Diaspora Suite (a kind of homecoming, recorded in San Francisco with some fellow Bay Area musicians he grew up with). Each project cleverly combined traditional cantorial songs and elements of jazz, blues and rock, with Bernstein serving as composer-arranger-producer and trumpeter/slide trumpeter. Bernstein’s Millennial Territory Orchestra debuted with 2006’s MTO, Vol. 1, which featured large ensemble interpretations of tunes by Stevie Wonder (“Signed, Sealed, Delivered”), Prince (‘Darling Nikki”) and the Grateful Dead (“Ripple”) as well as Benny Moten (“Toby”) and Charlie Johnson & His Paradise Band (“The Boy in the Boat”). They followed with 2008’s We Are MTO, which included renditions of Fats Waller’s “Viper Song,” Don Redman’s “Paducah,” Count Basie’s “Dickie’s Dream” and the Beatles’ “All You Need Is Love.” Their 2011 recording, MTO Plays Sly, was a tribute to the music of Sly & The Family Stone and featured the late P-Funk keyboardist Bernie Worrell along with vocalists Dean Bowman, Sandra St. Victor, Antony Hegarty and Martha Wainwright. In 2012, Bernstein combined forces with New Orleans piano master Henry Butler in the retro-flavored Butler, Bernstein & the Hot 9. Their critically acclaimed 2014 Impulse! debut, Viper’s Drag, featured spirited renditions of Fats Waller’s title track along with tunes by Jelly Roll Morton and originals by Butler. In keeping with Bernstein’s wildly eclectic nature, the group ranges from King Oliver to Professor Longhair to Billy Preston in concert. The restlessly creative Bernstein continues to juggle working several bands. During his recent residency at The Stone in NYC, he trotted out Sexmob, Millennial Territory Orchestra, Spanish Fly, Blue Campfire and Universal Melody Brass Band. Says the trumpeter-composer-arranger of his modus operandi in all of his wide-ranging musical situations: “I’m trying to present this way of looking at music where you can do a Jelly Roll piece, then a Leonard Cohen piece, then an Ornette Coleman piece, then a Duke piece and then a piece by The Band. And it’s not even about it being eclectic, it’s just music. Let’s play it. Here’s a chart, let’s go!” |
