WALTER CAIN

Walter Cain is the founding principal at WaCa Design, a NY City-based collaborative design studio focused on building projects using sustainable building materials.  He is pursuing architecture as a second career.

He first came to Rockland County in 2004 when he and his husband Paulo Ribeiro purchased an historic home in Piermont.  The process of restoring and expanding this house and gardens inspired him to leave his career in finance and pursue a Master of Architecture degree, which he completed in 2015.

Before founding WaCa in 2017, he worked at ORE Design + Technology in Brooklyn.  At ORE, he was project manager for the build-out of Project Farmhouse, Grow-NYC’s event space near Union Square. At WaCa, he is leading experimentation with sustainable building materials in a variety of projects, including residential and cultural designs.  In 2018, WaCa produced DEMO-DEMO, a pop-up art installation made from construction detritus, which was featured at Open House NY Weekend.  Projects in Rockland County include an expansion of an existing residence, a subdivision master plan, and a public park.  He has received two Merit Awards from the Rockland County Historic Society for renovations of two historic homes.

Prior to architecture, he enjoyed a 27-year career in finance and investment management, most recently as partner at private equity firm Lexington Partners.  He holds a BA in English from the College of Charleston (SC), an MBA in Finance from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and a Master of Architecture from Columbia University.  He is currently pursuing his architect’s license in New York State.

His involvement at Edward Hopper House began with the 2016 renovation of Hopper’s bedroom, a collaboration with interior designer Ernest de la Torre.  He currently serves on the capital campaign committee and is leading the design of the planned addition to the house.

BERT HUGHES

Bert was born and rasied in Altoona, PA. As a student, he played in a marching band in the inaugural parade for J.F.K. He has a B.S. in music education from Indiana
University of Pennsylvania. He taught music in New York public schools for 35 years, the last 25 at Nyack High School. He instituted the Nyack Jazz Enssemble into its permanent curriculum. While at Nyack High School, he was also the advisor for Students Opposing Starvation (S.O.S.), and began doing Midnight Runs with students. To this day, Bert and his wife, Chris, continue Midnight Run and Bert serves on the Board of Directors. As a long time member of the Nyack Parks Commission, Bert was responsible for getting permanent toilet facilities and for more than 25 years, he arranged the free summer outdoor concerts in Memorial Park. The newly designed gazebo is dedicated to Bert and Chris.

Bert, along with Ray Wright, started music in the Edward Hopper House Museum garden 40 years ago and is the reason we are honoring Bert at our virtual jazz concert on July 9.

He is a one-of-a-kind community leader whose love for music and the arts has not only brought joy to thousands but has contributed and served the community he lives in. He is involved with Nyack  Housing, Rockland Housing Action Coalition, Nyack Housing Assistance Corp, Rockland Sister Cities Project in Nicaragua, Nyack Seniors, Inc. and the Rockland Interfaith Breakfast Program in Spring Valley. Both Chris and Bert have been instrumental in the creation and continuation of Rockland Helping Hands for the Homeless.

Bert’s instrument is baritone sax. He has played small combos, big bands and is currently a member of the Hudson Valley Symphonic Wind Ensemble.

We hope that you will join us in honoring Bert and celebrating the 40 years of world-class jazz that he has brought to all of us!
